“Whether in the classroom, on the trading floor and as executives in a boardroom context, every student benefitted from the wisdom of real entrepreneurs, a top head-hunter and collaborating as two schools.” Ian Smith, Vice Principal, Surbiton High School

Classroom to Boardroom at Network Rail/Bikeworks with Hampton and Surbiton Schools

“Whether in the classroom, on the trading floor and as executives in a boardroom context, every student benefitted from the wisdom of real entrepreneurs, a top head-hunter and collaborating as two schools. Some students developed confidence to present, others to network - all were challenged and regularly placed outside their comfort zone. Learning came from doing, enjoyment from teamwork, success from execution under pressure.”

Ian Smith, Vice Principal, Surbiton High School

EiA ran two ‘Classroom to Boardroom’ programmes with the 50 students from Hampton and Surbiton. The challengers for this programme were Network Rail (www.networkrail.co.uk/) and Bikeworks (www.bikeworks.org.uk/)

Network Rail looks after the rail infrastructure so that the trains can get passengers and freight to their destination safely and on time. They also manage 19 main stations around the country including Kings Cross, Euston, Victoria, Bristol Temple Meads, Birmingham New Street and Manchester Piccadilly. Bikeworks use the bicycle to deliver social change through retail, employment and training, disability and business to business.

Student comments:

  • The presentation and the sense of accomplishment at the end with the end result was the best feeling in the world.
  • I enjoyed working with different people and the programme as a whole was brilliant and I would recommend everyone to do this programme.

Bikeworks use the bicycle to deliver social change through retail, employment and training, disability and business to business.

Student comments:

  • The actual presentation was really fun since I thought it would be very formal but it turned out to be great. Also working in a team and with other people I had never met before was also great.
  • Delivering the final presentation as a keen to see our hard work pay off. Then receiving such appreciated feedback.

The students attended either Network Rails offices or Bikeworks offices to present their solutions to the challenge to a Board of executives. The Network Rail Board included Loraine Martins and Bikeworks included Jim Blakemore.

Here is what the students thought about the programme.

  1. 100% of the students felt the event ran smoothly and any problems were handled well.
  2. 100% of the students felt they had ample support from the EiA coaches.
  3. 100% of the students found the programme very interesting and would definitely recommend it to others

The students gained the following by taking part in the programme:

  1. 97.6% of students increased their understanding of business and enterprise.
  2. 100% of students have increased skills to help their school learning and increased their future employment chances.
  3. 100% of the students found the experience of presenting in front of senior board members extremely enjoyable and helpful in increasing their confidence.
